Gauteng

Gauteng , formerly known as the Transvaal, is the smallest South African Province. Although Gauteng has no official regions, reference is made to the Northern Gauteng and Southern Gauteng regions.

The two major cities are Pretoria to the North and Johannesburg to the South.  To the west of them lies the Magaliesberg Mountains, an ideal escape from the cities’ frenetic pace.  The Magaliesberg area is home to the The Cradle of Humankind (World Heritage Site) where many hominid fossils have been discovered providing information on early man and his environment.  Its 13 sites include the Sterkfontein Caves and Wonder Cave.

To the North West of Pretoria is Sun City which lies in the North West Province.  This is easily accessible from Pretoria and there are day tours from Johannesburg.

Northern Gauteng
The Northern region of Gauteng consists mainly of small towns and rural communities, apart from Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa. Cullinan, a small mining town 30km East of Pretoria was established in 1903 and still has an old world charm with many historic buildings.  The town’s diamond mine, Premier Diamond Mine, is world famous for its Cullinan diamond, the largest diamond ever found.

Southern Gauteng
Johannesburg, the unofficial capital of South Africa, is in Southern Gauteng. This region is the most highly industrialised part of the country and is not particularly attractive. It has several towns and cities located mainly on the east-west axis or Witwatersrand, along which gold was originally found. It also includes the Vaal triangle, south of Johannesburg, another highly developed area.
