A visit to South Africa need not be a frantic rush from one energetic physical activity to another. Many more leisurely activities exist, in which the jaded visitor can get away from it all, relax and generally “chill-out”.

Visit one of the recreational beaches to soak up the sun, cool off with a swim in the ocean and enjoy an ice cream or two. Alternatively, visit one of the more remote or general beaches, stroll along the golden sands and take in the peace and tranquillity of it all.

There is plenty of entertainment to keep you occupied, be it a casino, festival or sports event. While the casino industry is in its infancy, there are a number of casinos to choose from. There are also numerous festivals throughout the year, varying from food and wine to roses and whales, almost every town has something to celebrate. Being the sports mad nation that South African is, ensures weekends of endless sporting entertainment from rugby and soccer to athletics, tennis and horse racing.

Opportunity to enjoy fine food and good wine abounds. Almost every conceivable cuisine, reflecting the wide diversity of cultures, is available at fine cafes and restaurants. No visit to the Cape would be complete without visiting estates along the wine and brandy routes.

Experience South Africa’s diverse and beautiful countryside by helicopter, car, train, wagon or boat. It is incredible to experience this scenery from the air but just as rewarding are the scenic drives along the coast or through magnificent mountain passes. Another unforgettable experience is a train trip on an old stream train or the luxurious Rovos Rail. A more unusual experience is a wagon trip through the forest or up a mountain pass. Lastly, for a fitting end to an eventful day enjoy a sundowner cruise on a bay or estuary.

And when its time to go home and thoughts of mementoes come to mind, a visit to one of the large shopping malls will meet your every need from clothing to arts, crafts and curios. Alternatively, visit a gallery or studio for something different in the line of ceramics, pewter, jewellery, paintings and beadwork to name a few.

The four categories of activities are South Africa Active, South Africa Culture, South Africa Leisure and South Africa Wildlife.
