JohannesburgJohannesburg, South Africa’s largest city is without doubt the unofficial Capital of South Africa. It is the financial hub of the country and the OR Tambo International Airport is the main gateway to South Africa. This city, also known as Egoli (place of gold), is steeped in history and was at the heart of the country’s political and social transformation. The city-centre itself is run-down but downtown Johannesburg has been rejuvenated and this “Newtown” boasts the Nelson Mandela Bridge, MuseuMAfrica (Johannesburg’s premier history museum), Craft Centre, Cultural Centre, the SAB World of Beer and more. The epi-centre has moved from the city centre out to the northern suburbs, where Sandton City has taken over as the showpiece of the city, with luxury hotels, convention centres, large shopping malls, theatres and restaurants. In contrast Soweto, a product of the apartheid era, has one of the highest concentrations of people in Africa and today is a mixture of shacks, mansions and informal traders. This township is home to the struggle including the infamous 1976 Soweto uprising. There are many interesting things to see and do in Johannesburg, including a guided tour of Soweto, a visit to the Apartheid Museum, Gold Reef City and a wide range of art galleries and live theatres. There are also tours to Pretoria, Cullinan, Sun City, the Pilansberg Game Reserve, the Rhino & Lion Park and Lesedi Cultural village in the Magaliesberg.
