There are a number of car hire companies in South Africa with an international
presence. Our preferred supplier Avis, has quality
vehicles and their fleet of cars is regularly reviewed.
Car hire pre requisites
- Possess a valid drivers licence. The licence has to be in
English and include a photo. An international drivers licence,
together with your original licence is also acceptable.
- Be over the age of 23, a young driver surcharge is levied on
drivers between the ages of 21 and 23.
- Possess a valid credit card.
Hiring the car
- 24-8 Cybertravel will reserve the car on your behalf but the
contract is between you and the car hire company.
- The rates quoted are subject to change.
- The rates include:
- Unlimited kilometres
- Airport surcharge
- Personal accident insurance
- Maximum collision damage waiver (CDW)
- Maximum theft loss waiver (TLW)
- Tourism levy
- Value Added Tax (14%)
- The rates exclude:
- Refuelling
- Fuel deposit
- Contract fee
- Delivery and collection fees
- Young driver surcharge
- Additional driver
- One way drop off fees
- Fine handling fees
- Driving the hired car into neighbouring countries requires a
letter of authorisation from the car hire company. If permission
is granted, additional charges may be levied.
Collecting the car
- Present the car hire company with your drivers licence,
booking reference or voucher and valid credit card.
- A reserve, to cover costs, is usually placed on the credit
card with the actual costs debited on return of the car.
- The contract with the car hire company covers issues such as:
additional drivers, type of insurance required, duration of car
hire and drop off location. It is advisable to take full vehicle
insurance including theft, collision damage and waiver of excess.
In signing the contract you accept the car hire company’s terms
and conditions. Read them!
- Ask for a list of contact numbers in case of an accident,
breakdown, theft of vehicle or any other vehicle related problems.
- Enquire about the procedure to follow with regards to an
accident, theft or breakdown of the vehicle.
- Check the vehicle thoroughly for damage to the bodywork,
presence of emergency tools, spare wheel, correct functioning of
engine, gears, brakes and lights. Any acceptable deficiencies
should be reported to the car hire company for recording on the
contract before departure. If the deficiencies are
unacceptable/dangerous, the vehicle should be immediately changed
out.
Whilst the vehicle is in your possession
- Extensions to the car hire period are to be negotiated with
the car hire company. Remember the rates are calculated per
24-hour period and not a calendar day.
Returning the car
- Refuel as near to the return point as possible to avoid a
large refuelling surcharge.
- Other considerations are to:
- Record the distance travelled
- Have the car hire company inspect and acknowledge the
condition of the car
- Check you have removed all your possessions from the car
- Hand in the keys and finalise the account
